Overview
Atelier Montmiral is a small, independent art school set in a magnificent location in southwest France. Situated within the medieval bastide of Castelnau de Montmiral and surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and sunflowers, the art school offers courses in drawing, painting, and printmaking together with an exceptional range of studio facilities.
Originally the ‘Ancienne Ecole' of Castelnau de Montmiral, the atelier occupies a dominant position within the heart of the hilltop village. The building operated as a school for approximately 100 years and closed in the latter part of the 20th century to become a residential property. Atelier Montmiral brought it back to its former glory as an art school in 2004.
Art courses and workshops are run from early spring through to late autumn and are structured to accommodate a wealth of creative pursuits from preliminaries like basic color mixing through to more complex processes such as digital photo etching. Mick and Bunny Newth are both established artists and professional tutors with over 25 years experience; together they offer a unique learning experience for practicing artists through to complete beginners. Unlike many art courses, they provide full-time daily tuition and individual guidance to art students at all levels.
Atelier Montmiral attracts students worldwide with a broad range of creative backgrounds, including those that wish to rediscover their creativity; foundation, graduate and post-graduate students in search of more stimulating working environments; art teachers and lecturers needing personal time to refocus; amateur artists who wish to learn new skills; and of course complete beginners who simply wish to learn about making art. Whether you’re looking for a creative holiday, a relaxing art break, an introduction to painting and printmaking or an advanced specialist workshop, Atelier Montmiral can provide flexible, inspirational art courses designed to meet your individual needs.
Testimonials "The art course was terrific and I feel very energised as a result. Very pleased and somewhat astonished at what I was able to achieve. Thanks to you both for your input and help. I was delighted with the whole package. It was like staying with friends." Simon - Civil Servant – Beginner
"I hope that the remaining guests managed to achieve the same sense of personal achievement as I did. Of course I know that there is nothing magic about the hard work that you both put into making everything run so smoothly and your attention to the smallest detail contributes significantly to the overall success of the whole experience. You are both excellent teachers and I envy the way in which you seem to complement one another when giving support and advice. Every aspect of the week was excellent and I return home energised and more confident about my ability to return to my own work." Jenny - Art Lecturer – Advanced
Accommodations In terms of accommodations, Atelier Montmiral provides comfortable, tastefully decorated, and spacious twin rooms either within the school or the delightful medieval gite a few minutes walk away in Castelnau, which is renowned for being one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Food is always important and Atelier Montmiral offers a daily French-style breakfast with fresh fruit and yogurts, and a light lunch. In the evenings, three/four-course dinners are provided with local Gaillac wine, and on some nights students eat in the local restaurants within the village. Atelier’s cooking generally reflects the delicious local cuisine using regional recipes often with an added Mediterranean influence. Wherever possible, fresh local produce is purchased, and dishes often change according to seasonal delicacies.
